Inca Trail day 2
Wayllabamba to Pacaymayo

This is the longest and most strenuous day on the trek. From the campsite the trail climbs the steep-sided Llullucha valley through enchanted native Polylepis woodland to the ‘Puna’, the treeless grasslands of the high Andes. The trail traverses an open meadow and ascends to Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s) pass, the highest point on the trek at 13,776ft/4,200m. From the pass the trail descends steeply to the valley floor and the next campsite near the Pacaymayo river.
Total distance: 7 miles/11 kms. Estimated walking time: 6-7 hours
Maximum altitude: 13,776ft/4,200m. Altitude at campsite: 11,480ft/3,500m

Inca Trail day 3
Pacaymayo to Wiñay Wayna

The day starts with the ascent of an Inca stairway, past the small Inca site of Runquracay and over the Runquracay pass (3930m/12,894ft). The path descends to the ruins of Sayacmarca, an intricate labyrinth of houses, plazas and water channels, perched precariously on a rocky spur overlooking the Aobamba valley. From now the Inca trail becomes a well-defined path of granite paving stones as it enters the upper fringes of the cloud forest. The route passes the Inca complex of Phuyupatamarca, a maze of stone towers, fountains and stairways that spills down the mountainside. The path begins a long descent down an ancient Inca stairway through ever-changing layers of cloud forest to the campsite by the ruins of Wiñay Wayna.
Total distance: 10 miles/16 kms. Estimated walking time: 8 hours
Maximum altitude: 12,792ft/3,900m. Altitude at campsite: 8,692ft/2,650m
