MISSION:

Peru Rocks is the latest concert from the Love Hope Strength Foundation. 65 musicians, cancer survivors and supporters are setting out upon a 4 day trek along the Inca Trail in the Andes. The musical journey symbolizes the “Climb Back from Cancer (TM)” of millions of survivors around the globe, and celebrates the lives of those we lost. We will end our journey in the Inca Ruins of Machu Picchu where we will celebrate the power of Love, Hope and Strength. The mission is to raise money and awareness for cancer care in Peru. We will be working in conjunction with ALINEN to purchase lifesaving equipment for INEN, the main cancer center in Peru. We will also be moving forward with plans to set up a Love Hope Strength chapter in Peru in order to continue a national plan to educate and raise awareness of cancer and promote early detection. Learn more about our next concert/climb by joining the LHS Army.

The daily lunchtime update (okay afternoon as work went suddenly mad!!) from Sheffield, UK.

Today it is sunny warm and almost feels like a Spring day in this small part of the UK. Hope all the jetlag has eased off and the acclimatisation is going well for everyone. I have no doubt certain of you have been exploring the lanes and bazaars in the city and trying not to buy too much for that trek coming up.

Mike and Jules no doubt your missing the 2 boys already and already counting down to that day you get back home, had to smile when I read your “blog” entry Jules about Oli being your pageboy, will have to see if Sue Quayle has any photos of the wedding day with him on to embarrass him on the Guerrilla Tactics Tour in the UK soon!

Got tickets for Stiff Little Fingers here in Sheffield on Friday so Mike if you can just put together a version of Alternative Ulster with the rest of the lads for the webcast for me!!!

Waiting the next instalment of your travel tales all of you … oh and forget Kilmanjaro Rocks or K2 Rocks or Nanga Parbat Rocks or Ayres Rock Rocks! Next year you need to do Edale Rocks in the Peak National park!!!!

Enjoy your day oh and cheer on the mighty Rotherham United Vs the once mighty Leeds United in tonight’s only UK footie match in that really important Johnstone Paint Inter Mickey Mouse Challenge Tea Cup thing!

October 8th, 2008 | 11:46 am

Derrick & Lee….
Have yourselves a wonderful experience on your fascinating journey….We’re cheering you on back here in the states & also many blessings from Heaven~

Hi Katie!

Hope you arrived safely and are having a wonderful time. Am insanely jealous of you! I would much rather be halfway up a mountain right now.

Things here are fine, you have just missed Christine and Bailey who popped in to say hello. Bailey is getting BIG (and still eating loads of food).

Have a great trek, you can do it!

Love from

October 9th, 2008 | 8:29 am

Hi Julie,
Thanks much for sending this, I’ll be following the trek closely.

Egad, I guess you all saw the crash at last year’s site (Luklau, or something like that) which killed all but the pilot, some 19 people . You can be glad your plane diverted last year.

All is well in Georgia, some welcome rain the last two days. Our news will be boring next to yours, once again I know you will have the “time of your life” and make many close friends along the way to doing a lot of good raising money for cancer.

God bless, will keep in touch.

Your proud dad

October 9th, 2008 | 8:52 am

Julie,

I know you are having fun and I can not wait to have you back “Lucy”. Stay out of trouble up there as I am no where around to get you out of it..I know your not working out hard enough…so please do a few push ups at the end of the day to stay in shape.

Luv ya Ethal (Stacy)

October 9th, 2008 | 9:26 am

Hi Aden,

Glad you made it safe!

I’m in CA for the week, but still keeping track of your journey.

The night you left, I got an email from my ex-BF, Barry. His dad, John Lancaster, was transported to Denver VA hospital for surgery. They found a lemon sized tumor in his throat (never a smoker) and they are running tests and then surgically removing as much as they can this week someime.

If you guys could keep him in your thoughts and prayers while you are trekking, that would be great.

Super nice man, who is pretty much alone, (outside of Barry) so it really means alot for you to think of him.

On a lighter note, I’m in CA all week for my real estate investment thing with Armando. Should be interesting!

Best of luck and will send you another note later in the week.

Have a blast!

Sharlene

October 9th, 2008 | 10:11 am

Hey Julie & Peter***
You two definitely know how to rock it!
I only hope I can grow up to be as cool as you one day! Next time, you’ll certainly remember to pack your personal massage therapist, right?
Lots of love & light***

After months of planning finally it came true. It´s amazing what you guys are doing, I want to thank each and every one of you. Have a great hike, I´ll be waiting in Lima getting things ready for final concert.

October 9th, 2008 | 11:45 am

Hey, Mr Harper. Good luck with the trek. Keep playing that guitar to keep the spirits up in the tough times. Can’t wait to see you play at a venue slightly closer to me again.

October 9th, 2008 | 11:56 am

Alex-

Good luck with the hike. After Everest, this should be cake!

If you can, send out some inspiration to our friend, Seton Holt, who has been battling colon cancer for over a year. She was diagnosed within months of giving birth to her first child. She’s only 42 and is looking at lifelong treatment for this disease.

Anyway, see you when you get back! Can’t wait to see all the footage…

Love,
Jenn

October 9th, 2008 | 1:01 pm

Nese - Hope you had a good journey to Peru, and hope you’re ready for the start of the great trek tomorrow! Don’t get blisters, and watch out for Paddington Bears! (Oh, did you have Paddington Bear in the States? Maybe not). What’s new here in Leeds? The sun has been shining but its been cool. I had yet another job interview yesterday, in York. Hope I’ll finally have some good news to share soon. I have shoulder pain from typing up hundreds if not thousands of dates & venues to launch my Cheap Trick Tour date history online, but getting some good extra info from people! And I need to start packing this weekend for the trip to Oz for the CT/Def Lepp shows.

Anyway, have a fun trek. Enjoy Peru, enjoy the wonderful company, remember those in whose memory you are walking, don’t forget that music is life, and that YOU rock! And is there anyone in Peru that doesn’t love Nese yet? I look forward to reading the journal every day!

Hugs! Kim :-)

P.S Good luck to ALL of you who are doing the trek for such a worthy cause, have a wonderful time, you all rock!

Best of luck to you and your conquest of Machu Picchu. Not sure though if your moonlighting gig at Disney will work out in the future. Maybe something like “Survivor Man vs. Pooh Man in the Alps” could be a possibility for you after this :)

I am in awe of your incredible journey from a person who was ’stricken but determined’ to a Stage IV ’survivor’. Even when most in the medical community didn’t believe in you those of us who love you never doubted your resolve. Who knew it took nearly dying to learn about really living? Much love and RESPECT to you and all your friends on the mountain. -d.

Mike & Jules,
Wishing you all the best for the trek ahead. It’s a fantastic thing you’re all doing. We’re enjoying following your progress this end. Jules, you must be in complete melt-down now having heard everyone’s stories. We’ll be thinking of you on our Jellybeans date this afternoon. I’ll forward your apologies ;-)
Dylan did very well swimming on Wednesday. He managed to swim on his back in the deep end with only a “sausage” for support. Cangi on the other hand, was holding on to the instructor for dear life!
As you probably tell, all is well this end.
Take care & cariad mawr, Del, Berwyn & Boys xxxx

October 10th, 2008 | 5:00 am

To Armando, George, Cherron, Kelly, Ryan and Mayor Jim -

My best wishes to you all as you start the trek. As you take your journey, I’ll be thinking about the journey my Mom and I take everyday and the prayers that we say to make sure that there is a tomorrow, a next week, and god willing, a next year. Thank you for carrying my prayer flag for her. When you get to the top, I’ll be thinking of the daughter that you are helping in some remote village of Peru whose prayers you will answer when her mom’s life is saved by the equipment you funded. You all are heros to her and to me.

Have fun, be safe and thank you.

xoxo, Kay Elizabeth

PS. A, Come home soon - people miss you back in Hudson County!!!! :)

October 10th, 2008 | 5:29 am

Nese,

It’s Friday 10th and the trek begins! Looks like an amazing day ahead for you, though every day of your intinerary looks amazing! Hope it goes well and you have fun! Caught a glimpse of you on one of the photo’s so glad to see you made it there OK.

I’m writing early today as I’ve been persuaded to go out tonight. Going down to Maltby near Sheffield to see a guy called Martin Simpson, who is apparently rated one of the top acoustic & slide guitarists in the world! And you can’t beat great live music can you? So I’ll be enjoying music later whilst you’re enjoying the company of some wonderful musicians over there!

Hope you have a great first days trek, and best wishes to every single person with you!

Kim

Aden and Serena,
HI! I can’t wait to see where you’ve been today. I hope your breaths up the big hill were filled with invigoration and you bring back some of the breath-taking-ness of Peru (only figuratively - I’m sure if you actually brought some rocks or something, it’d be illegal. Stay out of trouble please.)
I think Pearl Street misses you. I know I do.
Enjoy every step.
Big hugs, hope you can see lots of stars,

October 11th, 2008 | 6:15 am

Nese,

Day 1 is under your belt, and as I write, you should be preparing to get the day 2 trek under way. Looks to be a gruelling one, hope you and everyone make it fine, and hope you see more amazing sights en-route. I haven’t been able to see the podcasts but have viewed the photo’s daily, and cool to see some images from yesterday that I’d seen recently on TV here. Peru looks amazing, in terms of the people, the towns, the architecture, the ruins and the mountains. Can’t wait to see more as the trek progresses.

Fun night last night near Sheffield - Martin Simpson is an amazing acoustic folk guitarist, I wish I had 1% of of his talent. I really envy anyone who has musical ability, there’s not many things better than the talent to create music.

Have a great trekking day!

Dear Julie,
Before I was able to even see that picture close up, I knew it had to be you making friends with the children. I bet it made both of you happy. I also liked the picture of you there a couple of days ago.

Still warm in the south here, will be quite windy today. Am taking folks to ball game in Athens and will get a (low altitude) hike of my own to forage for food.

Hope all is well with you and that you don’t get on the sick list for any reason

Thanks for the Jonny L sign that arrived on Thursday - the new neighbors have multiple signs up for the enemy camp which give me indigestion daily.
Speaking of which, hope you are feeling good…..

The website’s fantastic. Feel like I’m there with you! The pictures are great. All’s well here. We’ve had a day filled with TIC, nofio and a visit to Chez Nelson. George, and all great trekkers,
Keep going strong!! Every breath you take, Every Step you make , we’ll all be watching you Thanks to LHS website and production crew , we all feel we are there with you.
You all represent the world that is suffering from the disease. Recently my very best friend lost his mother from cancer. She was like a second mother to me, when I went to visit her she was in very bad shape. She asked me how I was doing in life with promoting concerts etc. I said I love it. She smiled and said I am glad to se you happy. When I left her I gave her a hug and kiss. Couple days later she passed away. Everyone has someone close to them, that has this disease. What all of you are doing is awesome. keep going strong! You Are the TRUE LEaders of the World!! Mike Keep strumming that guitar for everyone in the world!
George, Dad Said “Hang in Close to the mountain”
GOD BLESS YOU ALL! One day I will join you all on This Amazing Journey That You all Take every year.

Hey Harper! Look away now to avoid footie scores…

Your lot annihilated the Borat 11, 5-1. Rooney *blech* got a hat trick (I think) and Stevie G phoned it in. :P Scotland had an okay-ish nil-all draw with Norway, but we now have the best striker in the world, cos you need mad skillz to miss the OPEN NET SITTER that he did. :P Worth waiting for the footage of that one!

At least the Sox won game 1 of the AL series, that’s all I can say ;)

Hope all the ‘onwards and upwards’ is going really well, am watching the podcasts raptly every morning but I’m looking forward to the stories on the next tour too… hugs, Px

October 11th, 2008 | 1:39 pm

Mr Harper - Wayne Rooney scored two late goals as England overcame a spirited Kazakhstan side in the World Cup qualifier 5 - 1 .Funny how I think of Harper following England qualifiers, remember the Chattery Swansea, 1 hour late and blamed the footy, at least you had the scores, just returning the favour. Be Lucky

Hi Heather, Jaime, James, and Trekkers,

I am hopeful that you can all feel the Love Hope Strength and prayers from your loved ones as well as from your community. For example, my niece, Heather’s cousin, Savannah, has sent emails regarding your journey to her sixth grade classmates and those classmates have been sending out your website address to classmates in neighboring schools.

Those photos posted are wonderful; one of my favorites is the little girl with the llama.

God’s speed to you trekkers.

Mom

Merce,

Hey girl! As Sue said, the weather here has been fantabulous! It was nearly 80 Saturday. I went on a Ghost Tour last night… some haunted pubs around the city. I fully expected John Yore to jump out from behind a beer tap and start singing “Love Shack”! But then I realized that he’s probably up on the mountain with you, so belt out a few bars of “Love Shack” for him. :)

Keep on trekkin’

Greetings Peru Rocks Gang!

Ok, you have been hiking hard for the past few day’s and are now on the verge of reaching the summit of Macchu Pichu, How exciting! :)
I hope that all is well amongst the Trekker’s and that somehow, someway, magical instruments mysteriously appeared. One more little thing before I go…we are experiencing a full moon over the next few nights here in California…I’m not an astromoner, but I’m guessing on a full moon down there also?…what incredible timing! So before you leave early this morning someone with inet access needs to download “Full Moon at Macchu Pichu” from the Dances For The New Milenium Album by the Ancient Brotherhood.
Just today I learned of a fellow firefighter who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, this was on the heels of a bone marrow registry that was conducted yesterday at our headquarters. There are many reasons for you being there, another story to tell…thanks so very much for your selfless devotion to a greater cause :)

Alan from California

Both your boys were over last night for dinner and a fire. There was a full moon that lit up the sky. It was beautiful. I can only imagine how beautiful it will be at Macchu Pichu. Our thoughts are with you, as well as all the other trekkers. Hopefully a few of those guitars were “smuggled” in!

It’s cloudy here, however, but I am sending my prayers and love to you and the trekkers.

Jaime, Heather, Jamie, Lanie, Jon and Samantha,
By now you are down from the mountain after what must have been a most amazing experience. As terrific as that was I assume now you and all the trekkers are even more excited because you are seeing what the entire experince was really all about. What your journey has accomplished for the less fortunate people of Peru. How gratifying that must be. You should all be so proud of yourselves. I know we all are. Let the rest of your journey be a safe one and we will see you soon.

October 15th, 2008 | 12:24 am

Hi Vickie! We’re thinking about you and the others and what a wonderful thing each of you is doing. I’ve also snooped through some of the other messages and it sounds like you’re with a fun group! Tell them they need to visit Dallas.

Tracy retired yesterday! Actually Chesapeake cut expenses and pulled the plug on Shale-TV! Got room for me over there?

You should be so proud of yourselves up there! Your courage inspires us!

Hey Nick, great to watch your travels yet again! Love the photo dated Oct. 9th. of you and Cy with the valley behind you, Dianne and I are huge Fixx fans going way back. Remind me one day to recount how a couple of years ago after a gig I was trying to descibe who you are to Jamie, who didn’t seem to know of you. How things change, small world. You should tour the states with them. Hope we can see you soon, it’s been way to long.

October 16th, 2008 | 11:30 am

Hi Mike - I was inspired by your Everest Rocks show I saw on TV last weekend. I visited the LHS site and became one of the army members. Hope to meet you and the guys one day in the SF Bay Area and enjoy the music. Thanks again and I DO have LOVE - HOPE and STRENGTH

Hi. I found you guys doing a search for a friend. She just found out her uncle in Peru has Cancer and they said that it’s “generalized” and that they can’t do anything, and want him to leave the hospital. Is there anywhere that he can go to get help? This was all of the sudden and the family is so scared. He does not have insurance, but my friends family in America will try to send money for any treatment. Thanks for the help!! you can email any info at tndj143@gmail.com

November 7th, 2008 | 11:38 am

Keep it up folks. My wife passed way 2002 at the age of 32 of cancer. She was a singer in a local Detroit band and loved everyone! Cyndi, besides being a singer, worked as a volunteer in nursing homes. She loved those who were forgotten. She was such a beautiful spirit to everyone she met, including myself. At 32, she was taken to early in life. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of Cyndi and the impact she had on every she came in contact with.

I have read all these letters and they really give a message of hope and encouragement. I am glad I just fell upon this site.
